Sri Sri Thakur

Such a Master is our revered saint of Dumurdaha. Or is he the saint of onkarashwar? But it is idle to quarrel about the way you would designate him. A master is not to be pinned down to a label or a locality. Sri Sri Sitaramdas Onkar Nath is the name we know him by; the small village of Dumurdaha in the district of Hooghly is his ancestral home and the holy city of Onkareshwar is the place he sanctifies while he is in silence and seclusion as he has been for a year and a half now.
The following pages attempt to recount the story of the Master's life through a few significant vignettes. It may look like a romance or a fairy story, but it is all fact, literal fact, drawn from actual life.

It is somewhere about 1898. A room in the first floor of a middle-class gentleman's house in Dumurdaha on the Ganges. The house of Braja Nath, they call it after the family Deity. Night.

A little boy of six lies with his father, mother and sister. Says the boy, pointing to the southern window,
"Look there Papa, look at Siva."
"Pray, where? Where is Siva, my son?"
"There-there-standing at the foot."
"There he is."
"How does he look, your Siva?"
"White-complexioned, wearing tiger-skin, matted hair on head, three-eyed, with a trisul (trident) in the left hand and a damaru (tabor, small drum shaped like an hour glass) in the right hand." (The boy describes what he sees)
"where, pray?"
Siva vanishes.

1918, January, 12 mid-night, chinsura...  A resident-pupil at ViswaNath chatuspathi (a school of oriental learning, founded by the Late Bhudev Chandra mukhopadhyaya), chinsutra, he shares with two fellows a room on the first floor of Bhudev babu's house.

All else are asleep. He sits in Baddha Padmasana, changes the attitude, sits normal and meditates with eyes closed and mind fixed on the heart. Whom should he see now but Siva, five faced, trident in one hand and tabor in another...

Akhil Bharat Jaiguru Sampradaya

On the 14th of Phalgun, 1343 Bengali era, Thakur Sitaramdas Omkarnath founded the JAI GURU Sampraday’. The name of His sampraday was based on the Divine Sound [Naad] of ‘Jai Guru’ which He used to hear constantly. Several years later, after the expansion of the ‘Jai Guru Sampraday’, Thakur named it ‘Akhil Bharat Jai Guru Sampraday’, and appointed 9 Trustees to look after the Sampraday. Thereby, Thakur entrusted the spiritual and legal rights to the ‘Akhil Bharat Jai Guru Sampraday’, and stated that this Organization is His walking Image [‘Sampraday AMAR choloman Vigraha’].

Thakur Siatarmdas Omkarnath’s Paramguru , ie Dasarathidev’s guru [Shri Damodardas Ji] was a Ramanandiya saint. Thus, our Sampraday [Akhil Bharat JaiGuru Sampraday] is a part of Ramananda Sampraday by default. Later, Thakur had sent His representatives to Ramananda Sampraday of Ayodhya for formal incorporation of our Sampraday in the Ramananda sect. The representatives were a bit confused about the scope of acceptance, but when they arrived, they were amazed to receive a warm and cordial welcome—our Sampraday was formally made a part of Ramamndiya sect. However, Thakur used to say—we are of Ramamnada order, but not excluding Ramanujacharya, because Ramanuja’s Sampraday is the beginning of Shree Sampraday.

The Ramananda sect worships only Lord Ram. Thakur’s Istadev was Ram, but still, He liberalised the Diksha Parampara of His sampraday, and gave the Mantras of all Deities, as per the adhikara, background, spiritual inclination of individual devotees. Every Form of Lord is inseparable from Lord Ram, and Thakur’s improvisation was to supplement the usual Ramanandiya customs. Even Thakur’s guru [Dasarathidev], gave the Mantras of 5 deities, ie- [person in whose body SKY element is more should recieve Vishnu mantra , in the same way for FIRE element Shakti Mantra , for EARTH element Shiva Mantra , for AIR element Surya mantra & for WATER element Ganesh Mantra .]

Thakur has composed numerous articles, dramas, poems, memoirs, didactic stories-- which have enriched the spiritual literary and cultural lineage of India.
Spiritual Lineage

The spiritual lineage of Thakur is continuing through the tradition of 'Diksha' where an authorised representative of Thakur bestows a mantra to the spiritual seeker. Thakur is the GURU of all disciples initiated in this Sampradaya.

Few of His messages are-

1) As long as a man doesn’t become inward, his pains do not end. Keep calling Him, and become inward.

2) Lord has two feet- Right and Left. The Right foot has joy, peace, happiness; the Left foot has disease, grief, sorrows. Whichever foot He puts forward, hold it and say ‘Guru Guru Guru’ - The end of Joys and sorrows.

3) “ Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Ram Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare “ .Always chant this Mahamantra .You need not worry about anything... More Naam More Bliss.

4) Blow away disease, grief, sorrow, pain, poverty, unrest with the Holy name, and proceed. Chant Naam while eating, lying down, rising, sitting – Hail Naam, Hail Naam.

5) You need not renounce the family, you won’t have to go to the forest. Wherever you are, you can still progress on the spiritual path and dwell in the world of Bliss! The suffering is only because of the sense of ‘me’ and ‘mine’…

6) Speak the Truth – Truth is Lord. One who can resort to Truth quickly reaches the Goal.

7) Leave evil company, evil discussion, all addictions. Always be pure.

8) Happiness is not in material pleasures – happiness resides in restraint, renunciation and prayers always.

9) The flame of a Lamp is not directed left or right, it directly rises upwards. If you try to curb it under a lid, the lid will be blackened with soot. Similarly, the Flame of Soul is Eternally directed upwards, the Prarabdha [consequence of past deed] tries to put a lid on it, and tarnishes the body with sins..

10) Pure food habit, holy acts, worship in Time-- With this, Oh Dear! You will see the Divine.

11) Instead of seeing the other’s faults, always look at your own faults. Your faults are keeping you away from your blissful identity.

12) Lord is ready to appear – the mirror of your heart lacks mercury – how will you visualize His image there?

13) Even if you are sinner, agonized, having thousands of faults – still if you take shelter by saying ‘ I am dedicated to you’ – you will surely attain Lord’s grace – There is no doubt about it.

14) Bliss is within – it can be found when Man becomes inward.

15) By knowing Guru, Mantra, Deity to be One and by chanting ‘Guru Guru’, Bliss is attained spontaneously. Of all worships, none is comparable to devotion for Guru.

16) Knowing everything to be Lord’s images, practice offering Pranam[obeisance]. He only has taken all forms, Man sees friend-foe, good-bad because of his sins.

17) Question arise in the mind of he who practices, the rest have no occasion for questions.

18) If you can’t become desireless with effort, then fill your heart and mind with His Holy Name, …there will be no place left for any desire.

19) Those who are capable of chanting Naam ceaselessly, are ferried across automatically by Naam, to His abode. Nam Sankirtan purifies the moveable and immobile worlds, and unveils a new lease of Energy…

20) Why is it that people fall even after resorting to Naam? The principle reason is bad Prarabdha [accumulated fruits of deeds]. Despite the fact that prarabdha makes a person fall, Naam lifts him afresh.

21) As long as there is a stock of accumulated evil deeds [Prarabdha], no joy is derived by Japa [chanting]. Even then, Japa shouldn’t be considered futile. Keep doing Japa whether you realize any pleasure or not—I am sure that ultimately you will experience the grace of Divine Mother!

22) There is One Who is the Contoller of the whole Universe.. He regulates the sun, the moon, stars, planets, all the atoms and molecules…

23) Nobody is independent, everyone is a puppet in God’s play, and has to dance to His tunes…

24) God is the Master of actions… we are his servants. Whatever we do, may it be for HIS pleasure. Let us not undertake any work that will displease HIM.’ Those who work with this sentiment will succeed in gaining eternal Bliss on earth.

25) The only Object of a devotee’s desire is GOD… A devotee should take exclusive refuge with God and undertake practices for realizing Him. Make sure, no other wish takes place in your heart….

26) Those who are undr My protection, why should they look at sense gratification? My Devotees cannot be insects in the excrement of sense gratification.

27) Renounce worthless concerns and just repeat ‘Guru Guru’ while standing, sitting, eating, lying down—keep repeating ‘Sharanagatoham—I am surrendered to You’… thereafter what transpires in your favour will be beyond your grasp.

28) Scriptures are true, scriptures are flawless; one who takes the shelter of scripture will be embraced by the Lord.

29) Forsaking of path shown by the scriptures has led to the present tide of sufferings, torment, disease and sorrow.

30) The mass of men who have gone astray will not be able to gain peace until they adopt the Path prescribed by Shastras. Shastras are the streams from which peace can flow…

31) There are some miserable spiritual aspirants who ruin countless women by taking the disguise of a seeker. What is the meaning of such acts? What’s the point? You didn’t become a seeker to ruin yourself in lust! Mahamantra of your Sadhana is ‘MA’ Naam. Adopt this Mahamantra and eternally unite with the feet of the Divine Mother by conquering fatal enemies like lust…

32) If practices such as ‘Karma, Yoga, Gyana, Tapasya’ are undertaken without taking refuge with God, there is great possibility of a downfall. God always protects him, who takes refuge in Him.

34) It is good for all peace loving persons to keep away from saints who approve desire-driven or indiscrete lifestyles.

35) Sitaram proclaims to all students, men and women- how many books have you read, how many exams have you passed? Whatever merit u have obtained from them—regular study of Gita and other scriptures will offer u much much more… you surely stand to gain a lot more!!

36) You will conquer the world if you can keep ’RAM RAM’ on your tongue always.

37) You should concentrate on your studies.do not read lustful novels and dramas. Do not associate with boys and girls who are accustomed to vice and improper conduct.

38) Work hard, always engage yourself in work. Sorrow is an eternal companion of lazy indolent people.

39) Eat satvik food. Don’t consume addictions [alchohol, cigarettes, tobacco, tea etc], don’t eat fish meat onion egg chicken. Don’t eat to your stomach’s full capacity, eat in moderation. Don’t eat indiscriminately in anyone’s hand at any place.

40)Don’t engage in laughter and merriment in female company. Beware! Don’t take to anything immoral!

41)Don’t waste much time in useless play. Time that has passed will not return.

42)Whatever is done is indeed Karma. That which is done to please God is Karma Yoga…

43)Let me tell you the gist of all sadhanas in a nutshell: to hear of His Name and Divine attributes with ears, singing His praise through speech, and contemplating Him with your mind.

44)Despite the fact that influence of Kaliyug has reduced the adherents of Sanatan Dharma, no one has the power to destroy it. Even if thousands of wolves form packs, can they devour the Lion?

45) Indirect knowledge may lead to doubts. But direct realized wisom cannot be perturbed by any doubt~!

46) Self Restraint is the life of this Nation [Bharatvarsha]. Men and women become immortal with self-restraint. The selfcontrolled ones remain blissful in the last hour, and are ferried across by divine vehicle…

47)As a consequence of virtuous deeds, the desire for spiritual practice was born in you. As a result of sins, the mind suffered fall—it will lift up again! It is every person’s destiny to rise and fall in spiritual Life, like tide and ebb of Ganga. The fall only helps in returning back with greater determination!

48)Human being is indeed the greatest creation of God, because it is only in a humanbeing that God has vested the freedom to exert all the sense organs according to will, God tests if this freedom of senses is abused.

49)Teach yourself and teach the world. Wisdom is not there in books, it is the fruit of spiritual practice, the soul of penances. By dry recital of scriptures like birds and animals, you won’t attain Wisdom even in 100 births. By worshipping Him, Wisdom will be unveiled-- by religious pursuits, the Power of Creator will embrace you.

1) ‘I had attained intense bliss on meeting Baba Omkarnathji. His spiritual realizations and stature reminded me of ancient Sidhhatmas of Bharat. The images of Siddha Purushas of Bharat attract me because Buddhism arose from India and then came to Tibet… I was benefited from the spiritual interaction with Omkarnathji. He was worried about the pitiable condition of Tiber, and supported the spiritual essence of their moral warfare. Baba had given me a woolen mat during our interaction, and I still use it…’
--Dalai Lama.

‘Beloved Sri Sitaram is verily Naam Avatara. His entire  life and personality is a radiant example and expression of Naam-  Bhakti and Naam-Shakti. I bow in silent reverence and love at his holy  feet. I deem it a very great privilege and a matter of greater joy to  write these few lines as my tribute to his divine personality.'  - Swami Chidananda ,President: The Divine Life Society

' ...Our fortune-- a fortune for all Bengalis, for all Indians, that we have such a Prophet amidst us, Who has attained the Ultimate state through renunciation, austerity and Sadhana since childhood, and has taken the great vow of spreading the Holy Name of Lord… I contemplate on Lord's promise of appearing at time of Dharma's downfall and Adharma's rise, and I thereby corelate the Divine Sitaram's appearance in the celebration of Sitaram's birth! This petty heart has no holy treasure to felicitate Him. I only have eternal thirst, deep agony, and tears of separation, and I offer all these to OmkarRupi SriOmkarnath~!’ --Mahamahopadhyay Gopinath Kaviraj

‘You have concealed your Identity [ Apan swarup chhipakar aya]. You have come from the SaketNagar [Nitya Ayodhya] to bestow grace on this earth. You are maintaining such a garb, so that nobody can recognize You… Lord comes in this way itself, with hidden identity… Sri KrishnaChaitanya had stressed on Krishna Nam… this time You have also propagated Ram Nam… You are an Embodiment of Love, and Incarnation of Prema. Getting Your darsan is a matter of immense fortune.’ Srimad Ram Manohar Das ji , Chhota Chhawni, Ayodhya

'Baba, what causeless grace you have. You came yourself to render the nectar of your words. Baba, what causeless grace you have!' -Ma Anandamayi

'Later I had His Darshan... His frail body was dispersing majestic power! Actually in my opinion, He had the state of Qutub, which is the supreme spiritual condition of an Incarnation, as per Sufi laws...' -Peer Vilayat Inayat Khan

‘When I was brought to Baba, His Srimukh [face] was radiant with extraordinary Light, which became brighter when I offered Pranm…’ -Jain Guru Sushil Kumar Muni

‘…There is no other Shelter in this world except Yourself. My earnest plea- do not make us orphans by departing early~! You have followed the Shastras throughout, I see no one like You.’ -Dr. Mahanambrata Brahmachari

‘His Whose powers run through the country, He always craves for preaching Harinam, That Master, Sitaram, is radiant in Omkar- He is the wish fulfiller, I offer Him Pranam.’ -- Mahamahopadhyay Dr Srijeev Nyayteertha

‘Its mentioned in Mahabharat, sign of Knower of Brahm is- He who covers His body with whatsoever, Who resides wheresoever, eats whatever little [like Sitaram]!’ Later, Jogendra pandit had declared in writing- ‘… as a consequence of several recent incidents, it has been proven inspite of our unwillingness – Sitaram is SriBhagwan in the Leelavigraha of a human form!’ - Mahamahopdhyay Jogendranath Sankhyavedantatirtha

‘Amidst everyone, it is Prema[Divine Love] which helps us to identify Who is Lord.’ Brahmachariji explained that Sitaram’s Love for Naam and Mankind is beyond comparison, he hasn’t seen such Love in anyone else…’ - Rev Prabhudatta Brahmachari

‘Sitaram, I was waiting for You. I was expecting that You will come after You leave Your Mauna... See Sitaram, after Sannyasa, one shouldn’t offer Pranam to anyone except Guru, nor should have special love or attention for anyone. But You know, for some days, my mind is craving to see You.’ --Shankar Purushottam Tirtha Ji
